'You've got to go out on a limb sometimes because that's where the fruit is.' - Will

If someone had told me last year that I should open my own private practice in nutrition counseling, I would have thought they were crazy. Don't they know how much work that is? How would I ever manage a part-time job in the Medical Center of Houston, a busy family, a husband that seems to work around the clock and a home that doesn't clean itself. Fast forward to a week before Thanksgiving, and my husband was laid off from the Oil and Gas Division. Ouch! Great timing.

I'm a big believer that God works in miraculous ways. Yes, the job was not a good fit for my husband. Yes, it took him away from our family most of the waking hours of the day. But, what now? Fortunately, my husband was able to find a wonderful new job within 8 weeks. He now has the privilege of working from home in a job he loves. So, what does this have to do with opening a new business??

During his time between jobs, I started to get frustrated that I wasn't contributing as much to our families financial needs. Yes, as a part-time stay-at-home mom I'm well aware of the work that I contribute. Our home couldn't operate without me at the helm. However, there are a number of days when I wonder - Hmmm, how many days do I need to scrub the toilet? Why not find a way to offer my extensive knowledge and practice in weight management and diabetes prevention to those in my own community. Let's be honest, Texans are not getting any smaller with all the fabulous food we have surrounding us.

So, here I am. Ready to go out on the limb. It turns out starting my own business has helped me prioritize my responsibilities and pass some onto my children. I mean, at 12 and 13 they should really be the ones perfecting the art of toilet scrubbing right? So Kingwood and North Houston neighbors - if you've been contemplating going out on a limb of your own to learn about nutrition, give me a call. Let's find that fruit together.
